Empty the bin

To ensure your machine continues to clean effectively, the clear bin must be emptied as soon as the dust reaches the MAX mark.

To empty the clear bin press the catch on top of the carry handle again to release dust directly into a dustbin.

Remove the clear bin by pressing the catch on top of the carry handle.

Shake or tap firmly to remove all dust from inside the fine dust collector.

Press firmly on the centre of the clear bin base to close.

Check the cleaner head

With the machine unplugged, remove the Cleaner head.

Lay the machine on its back.

Locate the red clip underneath the Cleaner head.

Slide the clip towards the ball and firmly pull the Cleaner head off.

Clear the Brush bar

Open the soleplate by undoing the two red release catches.

Using scissors, carefully cut away any hairs and fibres from the Brush bar.

Check the cleanerhead inlet for blockages and remove as necessary.

Check the cleanerhead opening on the machine for blockages and remove as necessary.

Check the internal hose

Undo the purple filter cap in the centre of the ball shell.

Remove the ball shell to gain better access to the internal hose.

Pull the red internal hose collar down, unclip it and then check for blockages.

Reassemble and test machine.

Has clearing the Cleaner head resolved the problem?

Whistling noise

This suggests that air is leaking, probably due to a blockage or clogged filters.

Please select the appropriate option

Check the bin and cyclone

Empty the bin.

Press the bin release button and lift the bin off the machine.

Clean the cyclone shroud.

With the base open, press the grey button on the side of the cyclone to remove the clear plastic bin from the cyclone.

Remove any fibres or debris from the shroud using a soft brush or lint-free cloth.

With the base open, press the grey button on the side of the cyclone to remove the clear plastic bin from the opaque cyclone.

Remove any fibres or debris from the shroud usibng a soft brush or lint-free cloth.

Check the inlet on the cyclone for blockages and remove as necessary.

Check the duct on the machine that connected to the cyclone for blockages and remove as necessary.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Has clearing the bin, cyclone and duct resolved the problem?

Test the machine to check Brush bar is spinning

Plug the machine in and recline into the vacuuming position.

Turn the machine on and watch the Brush bar through the Cleaner head window.

Does the Brush bar spin when the machine is reclined?

Check the cleaner head

With the machine unplugged, remove the cleanerhead.

Lay the machine on it's back.

Locate the red clip underneath the cleanerhead.

Check cleanerhead inlet and the corresponding opening on the machine for blockages and remove as necessary.

Slide the clip towards the ball and firmly pull the cleanerhead off.

Remove the filter cap

Undo the purple filter cap in the centre of the ball shell.

Remove the ball shell to gain better access to the internal hose.

Check the internal hose

Pull the red collar away from the machine and check the hose for blockages.

Check Cleaner head inlet and the corresponding opening on the machine for blockages and remove as necessary.

Check the Cleaner head opening on the machine for blockages and remove as necessary.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Check cleanerhead

If the problem is not resolved, carry out the following checks:

Open the soleplate by undoing the two red release catches.

Pull the Cleaner head brush housing away from the soleplate.

Clear the brushbar

Using scissors, carefully cut away any hairs and fibred from the Brush bar.

Locate the Brush bar end cap screw on the brush housing and undo using a Phillips screwdriver.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Has clearing the cleaner head resolved the problem?

Check the wand suction

Turn the machine on and with the machine upright, test the suction from the end of the wand.

Is there suction from the wand?

Turn the machine on

Recline the machine back into the vacuuming position and turn the machine on.

Is there suction from the Wand when reclined?

Check the changeover valve

Remove the bin and cyclone from the machine.

Remove the Wand from the machine.

Remove the hose from the machine.

Check the changeover valve for blockages and remove as necessary.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Check the Wand

Remove the Wand from the machine.

Lift the Wand handle up until it clicks.

Press the red Wand release catch at the top of the main duct (just above the ON/OFF power button) to detach the Wand.

Remove the bin

Remove the bin and cyclone from the machine.

Remove the hose

Locate the red hose catch at the base of where the bin was fitted.

Press the catch in the direction of the hose and firmly pull the hose out of the back of the machine.

Check for blockages

Check both parts for blockages and remove as necessary.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Has clearing the hose and Wand resolved the problem?

Check the changeover valve

Remove the bin and cyclone from the machine.

Remove the Wand and hose from the machine.

Check the change over valve for blockages and remove as necessary.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Has clearing the changeover valve resolved the problem?

Remove bin

To wash the pre-filters:

Remove the cyclone top and bin assembly from the machine.

Remove pre-filter

Lift the pre-filter housing catch.

Remove filter from the cyclone top.

Wash pre-filter

Run cold water through open end of filter for approximately 10 seconds.

Turn upside down and tap 10 times.

Squeeze and twist filter.

Repeat until clean.

Dry pre-filter

Allow 24 hours to dry (place filter on its side for quickest dry time).

Ensure filter is completely dry before refitting into machine.

Remove the post-filter

Lay the machine back and unscrew the blue ball shell assembly locking mechanism by turning anti-clockwise (Approximately 10 times) until it can be lifted off machine.

Twist post filter anti-clockwises and lift out from the machine.

Press down on each of the three catches to separate the post filter assembly into two parts.

Wash the filter

Rinse the filter element under cold tap for approximately 10 seocnds.

Tap the outer edge against hard surface 10 times.

Repeat until clean.

Dry post-filter

Allow 24 hours to dry.

Ensure filter is completely dry before refitting onto machine.

Re-assemble post-filter

To reassemble the post-filter, align the arrow on the tab on each part and firmly press both parts together until the catches click closed.

Place post filter assembly back onto machine and twist clockwise until it locks in place.

Replace ball shell assembly and turn the blue locking mechanism clockwise (approximately 10 times) until a ratchet noise is heard.

Has washing the filters resolved the problem?

Check the cleaner head

Check the red rod

When pressing down the red button to open the bin base, the red upper release rod may get stuck on the cyclone, preventing the base from opening.

Slide the red upper release rod on the back of the cyclone up towards the top of the cyclone pack and try the release button again.

Has freeing the rod resolved the problem?

Manually release the base

By sliding down the lower section of the red release rod, try to manually open the bin base.

Remove the post-filter

Lie machine back and unscrew the blue ball shell assembly locking mechanism by turning anti-clockwise (approximately 10 times) until it can be lifted off machine.

Twist post-filter anti-clockwise and lift out from the machine.

Check the housing for any debris and remove as necessary.

It is recommended that the filters on this machine are washed at least once a month.

Replace the filter and reassemble the machine.

Has this resolved the problem?

Clear the bin and cyclone

Empty the bin.

Press the bin release button and lift the bin off the machine.

Empty the bin by pressing the release button again to open the bin base.

Remove clear plastic bin

With the base open, press the grey button on the side of the cyclone to remove the clear plastic bin from the cyclone.

Clean the cyclone shroud

Remove any fibres or debris from the Shroud using a soft brush or lint-free cloth.

Check the top and bottom inlet on the cyclone for blockages and remove as necessary.

Check duct

Check the duct on the machine that connected to the cyclone for blockages and remove as necessary.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Has clearing the bin, cyclone and duct resolved the problem?

Check machine is reclined

The Brush bar will spin when the machine is reclined and stop when it is returned to the upright position or the grey Brush bar button is pressed.

Check the cleaner head

With the machine unplugged, remove the Cleaner head.

Lay the machine on its back.

Locate the red clip underneath the Cleaner head.

Slide the clip towards the ball and firmly pull the cleanerhead off.

Check the inlet hose

Undo the purple filter cap in the centre of the ball shell.

Check through for any blockages and remove as necessary.

If this is difficult, remove the post-filter side to allow more room to grip the internal hose cuff.

Check the Cleaner head inlet and the corresponding opening on the machine for blockages and remove as necessary.

Remove the Ball shell to gain better access to the internal hose.

Pull the red collar away from the machine and check the hose for blockages.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Open the soleplate by undoing the two red release catches.

Pull away the soleplate from the motor housing.

Undo the Phillips screw.

Rotate the end cap and remove the Brush bar.

Check the Cleaner head for any blockages and remove as necessary.

Using scissors, carefully cut away any hairs and fibres from the Brush bar.

Reassemble and test the machine.

Does the Brush bar spin after clearing the Cleaner head?

Please note: In normal use, the Brush bar automatically turns OFF when the machine is upright and automatically turns ON when the machine is in the vacuuming position.

Reset brush bar

To reset the Brush bar press the Brush bar control button twice or switch the machine OFF and back ON.

Has resetting the Brush bar resolved the problem?

Retest machine

Set the suction control slider to low and retest the machine.

Check flooring

The Brush bar may not be compatible with thick pile carpets and rugs.

Test the machine on a hard floor type.

When did the machine last have power?

Thermal cut out

Most Dyson vacuums have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filters need washing or your machine is blocked.

Carry out the performance checks, and if your machine cuts out unplug and leave for at least 2 hours to cool down.

Mothball smell

New machines may initially have a mothball-like smell due to the varnish used on their motors.

Plug in and switch on the machine.

Recline it into the vacuuming position.

Check the Brush bar through the window at the front of the Cleaner head.

What problem are you having with the reclining mechanism?

Check the ducts

With the machine unplugged, remove the Wand from the back of the machine (this is for a later check).

Lay the machine on the floor, bin side down and remove the Cleaner head by pressing the red release catch.

Check the lower duct (where the Cleaner head fits on the machine) for blockages and remove as necessary.

Turn the machine over and unclip the internal hose from between the two halves of the ball.

Check the internal hose for blockages and remove as necessary (it should be possible to see through to the lower duct).

Remove the Cleaner head from the machine and check the openings for blockages and remove as necessary.

Check the opening where the hose was fitted for blockages (in particular any pens or pencils etc.) and remove as necessary.

Re-assemble and test the machine.

Reassemble and test the machine.

The vacuum needs to be pushed slightly beyond vertical for the stabilisers to click into the correct position.
