How to set up your robot vacuum properly – according to Dyson engineers
London, England - April 16, 2026
Bought a robot recently? The first week with a new machine can make all the difference. Geordie Baxter, Dyson’s Head of New Product Development, Robot, shares three little tricks that helps owners unlock far better performance from their robot vacuum. From the very first mapping to the way you maintain your machine, these small changes can have a big impact on how confidently and efficiently your robot cleans.
1. Let Your Robot Complete One Full, Undisturbed Mapping Run
Dyson engineers say the most important clean your robot ever does is the very first mapping run – and it works best when left completely alone. Moving objects, following the robot around, or stopping it midway can disrupt the process and lead to an incomplete map.
When undisturbed, the Spot+Scrub™ Ai builds a detailed understanding and complete map of your home. That means more confident navigation, fewer loops or backtracking, and smarter, more precise targeting of cleaning zones over time.
“Think of it as teaching your robot the layout of your home,” Geordie explains. “The more uninterrupted that first run is, the more precise and efficient every clean after that becomes.”
2. Spend Five Minutes Setting Up Room Zones and Rules
Most people skip the setup step in the MyDyson™ app – but this is where small adjustments make the biggest difference to cleaning performance. Taking a few minutes to refine room boundaries, set rules, and customise routines helps the Spot+Scrub™ Ai behave more intelligently based on how you use your space.
Geordie recommends the following set-up:
- Split or merge rooms so the app reflects how you use the space (e.g., “Dining Area” vs “Kitchen”)
- Apply cleaning rules like “Vacuum only”, “Avoid area”, or “No mop” based on floor type
- Schedule more frequent cleans for high‑traffic zones rather than the whole home each time
- Use Targeted Clean for quick spot jobs instead of starting a full clean
“If you tell the robot how you actually live – where the high‑traffic zones are, where it shouldn’t mop, where pets sleep – the robot behaves far more intelligently,” Geordie says.
A quick note on privacy - we’re committed to ensuring that personal information is protected and never misused. While the robot’s camera ‘sees’ the room, it only records shapes and contrasts and no image data ever leaves the robot. Only the robot’s performance data is sent back to Dyson – for example how far it’s moved and how the clean has ended. This data allows us to learn and constantly improve with succeeding software updates.
3. Check the Roller and Tanks Weekly
Robot owners often fall into two extremes: over‑maintaining their machines or barely touching them at all. Dyson engineers say the Dyson Spot+Scrub™ Ai was designed so owners don’t need to check it constantly.
Instead, a simple weekly routine is enough:
- Empty the dirty‑water tank
- Top up the clean‑water tank
- Remove any fibres from the brush bar ends
- Wipe the sensors if you have pets or high dust
The robot’s self-cleaning features take care of the daily work, leaving you with only light maintenance. Following this routine prevents odour build-up, keeps sensors performing accurately, and maintains peak cleaning efficiency without creating a daily chore.
