Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an air styler and a hot air brush?

An air styler, like the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler and dryer, uses powerful airflow to dry hair and achieve a range of styles, from straight to curly. It has multiple attachments that you can switch between depending on your hair type and the style you want to achieve.

A hot air brush, like the Dyson Airsmooth™, is a specific type of air styler. It’s single-format device with a fixed brush head, and like an air styler, it dries as well as styles. It’s suitable for all hair types and uses powerful airflow to achieve mainly straight and wavy styles.

If you’re aiming for a smooth, salon-style blowout, a hot air brush is usually the simplest choice. If you’re looking for a device that can dry, curl, wave, straighten, smooth and add volume using different attachments, an air styler is the more versatile option.

What is the difference between a hot air brush and a heated thermal brush?

A hot air brush, like the Dyson Airsmooth™ styling brush, is essentially a hair dryer and brush combined. It blows hot air through vents in the brush to dry your hair as you style it. It works best on damp or towel-dried hair, and you can use it to dry, smooth, shape and add volume.

A heated thermal brush is more like a curling iron or straightener in brush form. Rather than blowing out air, the brush itself heats up. It smooths, adds body, reduces frizz and creates soft curls and waves, but it can only be used on dry hair, so it can’t replace a hair dryer.

If you’re looking for drying and styling in one step, choose a hot air brush for a salon-style blowout. If you’re after a device that can refresh dry hair while adding shape and volume, or for quick smoothing, the Dyson Airsmooth™ styling brush styles from both wet and dry.
