Precision floor cleaning methods
London, England - March 11, 2026
Many specialised floor cleaners are made to target different types of surfaces, but a more efficient approach can involve using the solutions you already have at home. This helps reduce costs, minimise waste and can lessen your environmental impact.
Read on for details on how to effectively clean various types of flooring using everyday household items, complemented by Dyson’s engineered cleaning technology.
Preparation and steps for effective floor cleaning
Proper preparation before applying cleaning solutions to floors can help deliver optimal results. Follow this systematic approach to get started:
1. Plan your route
Organise your floor cleaning sequence logically to maximise drying time and prevent re-contaminating cleaned areas with footprints.
2. Vacuum first
Remove dust and debris with a high-performance vacuum cleaner before introducing moisture. This can help prevent streaks and smears during wet cleaning.
3. Control water temperature
Cold water maximises the effectiveness of cleaning solutions and protects surfaces more effectively than warm or hot water.
4. Streak prevention
Apply cleaning agents and detergents sparingly and change water frequently for freshness.
The Dyson WashG1™ Wet Cleaner combines vacuuming and washing in one. The double roller system delivers rapid stain removal and increased manoeuvrability for a smear-free finish. The dual-tank system continuously extracts dirty water, so that only clean water contacts your floor.
5. Repeat regularly
Implement weekly vacuuming and washing cycles, with increased frequency in high-traffic areas. These floor cleaning techniques and Dyson floorcare technologies are efficient enough to incorporate into your regular cleaning routine for instant results without excessive time investment.
Effective household cleaning formulations
These versatile household floor cleaner recipes deliver professional results using ingredients you have in your home.
Sodium bicarbonate solution
Sodium bicarbonate (sometimes called baking soda) is valuable for baking but also effectively removes grease and embedded dirt. Combine half a cup of baking soda per litre of water and use it to clean tiles, laminate or vinyl surfaces. After application, follow with clean water extraction.
This solution also effectively neutralises odours in carpets. Sprinkle and rub sodium bicarbonate onto carpets and leave it to work for at least an hour before vacuuming.
Diluted white vinegar
This multi-functional cleaning agent addresses limescale, brings antimicrobial benefits and can help restore surface shine. To create a solution, add 50ml of white vinegar to 1 litre of cold water.
You can also clean grout with a concentrated paste of white vinegar and sodium bicarbonate, using a precision applicator (such as a small brush) before rinsing away with fresh water.
Citric acid and water
This citric acid solution is particularly effective against limescale and leaves a fresh scent. Combine 30 grams of citric acid with 1 litre of cold water.
Soap-based cleaners
Traditional soap-based cleaning solutions are gentle and effective on most surfaces. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of soft soap in warm water and dip a soft cloth into the solution. Use it to target specific spills or stains on hard floors, rinsing away residue with clean, cold water.
Linseed oil
This natural cooking oil maintains and protects wooden floors by penetrating minor surface scratches and enhancing the natural wood grain. Use a soft cloth to apply a thin layer to clean, dry wooden flooring. Wait a few hours for the oil to absorb, then remove any excess with a dry microfibre cloth.
Repurposing other household cleaning products for floors
Many household cleaning products can be repurposed and used to clean various types of flooring.
Washing-up liquid: This is highly effective for removing greasy deposits, particularly on ceramic tiles and PVC flooring. For optimal results, use 1 to 2 drops per litre of water.
Laundry detergent: Suitable for heavily soiled floors. Add a few drops to your cleaning water and wash floors as usual. Laundry detergent is not recommended for wood or natural stone surfaces.
Fabric conditioner: Occasionally, adding a few drops of fabric conditioner per litre of water can enhance the shine on heavily soiled laminate flooring and sealed parquet. However, it is not suitable for regular floor cleaning.
Rinse aid: A few drops of rinse aid, added to warm water, can create a streak-free finish and add water-repellant properties to ceramic tiles.
Surface-specific floor cleaning methods
Different floor surfaces require specific approaches to achieve optimal results:
Sealed or painted wooden floors
Recommended: Soft soap solution, occasional fabric conditioner treatment, spot cleaning with diluted spirits and vinegar and clean water extraction.
Avoid: Citric acid.
Waxed or oiled wooden floors
Recommended: Soft soap, curd soap, linseed oil treatment.
Avoid: Vinegar solutions, citric acid, detergents, dishwashing liquid.
Laminate flooring
Recommended: Diluted vinegar solution, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) solution, curd soap and occasional fabric conditioner.
Avoid: Laundry detergent, citric acid.
Ceramic tiles
Recommended: Citric acid, vinegar solution, dishwashing liquid, sodium bicarbonate, rinse aid.
Avoid: Soap-based and moisturising products.
Natural stone
Recommended: Vinegar solution, dishwashing liquid, sodium bicarbonate.
Avoid: Vinegar, citric acid, detergent.
Carpet
To remove stains from carpets, apply a paste of sodium bicarbonate, cornstarch (1:1) and water. Leave the solution to work for at least an hour before extracting it with powerful Dyson suction technology.
Vinyl and PVC flooring
Recommended: Vinegar solution, dishwashing liquid, sodium bicarbonate.
Avoid: Citric acid.
Linoleum
Recommended: Vinegar solution, diluted dishwashing liquid, rinse aid or soap solution.
Avoid: Hot water.
Flooring materials can be sensitive, so it helps to do your research before cleaning. When cleaning wooden floors, household remedies should be used carefully and only with mild products.
Exercise caution when mopping floors with dish soap or laundry detergent; this is particularly suitable for robust floor types like tiles, but too much of a concentrated solution can leave a streaky residue.
Cost-effective floor cleaning
Using household solutions to clean floors is a cost-effective approach that can also reduce waste from specialised cleaning products. These natural formulations, combined with Dyson’s engineered technology, can help protect surfaces while delivering professional-quality results.
