FAQs about winter hair care

How often should I wash my hair in winter?

Reduce washing to one or two times a week to help preserve your hair’s natural oils. If you have a very oily scalp, you may need more frequent washing with gentle, moisturising shampoos.

Can I use the same hair products all year?

Some hair care products work across seasons, while others may need to be adjusted as the seasons change. Lightweight summer products might not provide enough moisture in the winter. Pay attention to how your products perform to work out what’s best – if your hair feels dry, switch to more intensive moisturising formulations; if it feels heavy, choose lighter products.

Why does my hair get so much static in winter?

Static develops when electrons transfer between materials, creating an electrical charge – this happens more easily in winter because the air is dry.

Should I cut my hair shorter for winter?

Length doesn't necessarily make winter care harder, but damaged ends can face more challenges in cold weather. If your ends are compromised, trimming them can remove the broken strands that struggle most. However, healthy long hair can thrive with proper care in winter, so focus on the condition rather than the length.

How do I know if my hair is dry or damaged?

Dry hair feels rough, tangles easily, has visible split ends and might look dull. Severely damaged hair can feel stretchy when it’s wet and develop an uneven, porous texture that absorbs water very easily. If you notice these symptoms, increase moisturising treatments, reduce heat styling and avoid chemical processes.

Do heat tools always damage my hair in winter?

Heat styling tools can be used safely in winter with proper precautions. Always apply heat protectant, use the lowest effective temperature and make sure your hair is completely dry before using conventional hair straighteners or curling irons. The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer has intelligent heat control that prevents damaging temperatures.
