How to humidify a room for an optimal indoor climate
London, England - March 17, 2026
Room temperature isn't the only factor that determines your indoor comfort – humidity is just as important. Here's what you need to know about dry air and how to address it effectively, finding the optimal humidity for your home.
What does a humidifier do?
Humidifiers add moisture to your environment, transforming dry, uncomfortable air into a hydrated climate that can help you live and breathe more comfortably. By maintaining optimal humidity levels in your house, humidifiers help protect you and your family from the potentially damaging effects of dry conditions.
The Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool is engineered to help improve your air quality. Dyson Air Multiplier™ technology circulates purified and humidified air throughout the room and cools you in warmer weather.¹
What is the optimal humidity for a house?
Humidity measures the water vapour concentration in air. Optimal humidity is not a fixed value, but can vary depending on the environment, the season and the room. At 20°C, 50% relative humidity is considered optimal. Below 40% humidity is considered dry, while readings above 60% indicate excessive moisture.
How to tell if you need to humidify the air in your home
You can use a hygrometer to gather precise humidity data in your home. It’s a good idea to monitor readings over multiple days to make an accurate assessment of your environment and humidification requirements.
The Dyson Purifier Humidify+Cool lets you monitor and control your home air quality from anywhere. Live air quality reports are displayed on the LCD screen and through the MyDyson™ app.
Why does indoor air become dry?
Indoor air can become particularly dry in winter, as heating reduces moisture in the air. Cold air holds less moisture, which means any external-to-internal ventilation systems can only bring dry outside air into your home in winter. Less seasonal vegetation in winter can also lead to lower humidity in the ambient air.
While central heating can help you through the winter by raising the temperature in your home, it doesn’t address the lower humidity. Other solutions are needed to maintain a well-hydrated microclimate.
When should you use a humidifier?
Proper indoor climate control can impact your health and home comfort. If the humidity in your home is below 30% for an extended period, it can be a good idea to use a humidifier.
Consequences of dry air
Some warning signs that humidity is low include static electricity shocks when touching metal objects and throat discomfort or dryness when you wake up. You may also experience dermatological issues, such as dry skin.
An excessively dry home climate can also lead to wooden floors and furniture warping and leather surfaces cracking.

How to humidify a room without a humidifier
While engineered solutions deliver optimal humidity for your house, some science-based approaches can also address dry air in the home:
- Measure first: Use a hydrometer to establish the baseline humidity in your home and avoid increasing humidity above 50% to prevent mould.
- Strategic evaporation: Position damp towels or open containers of fresh water near radiators to maximise moisture distribution through evaporation.
- Laundry integration: Dry wet laundry indoors, using drying racks to release existing household moisture.
- Household plants: Introduce houseplants to improve your indoor climate while adding greenery to your home.
- Steam distribution: Leave bathroom doors open after showering or bathing to distribute humidifying steam.
